(Thesis group) from the Department of Botany, Chittagong University in 1985 and 1987. He completed his M.Sc. thesis entitled, “Ecological studies on site potentialities, nutrient status and yield of Tae (Camellia sinensis) at Oodaleah Tae estate, Chittagong” under the supervision of Professor Dr. Mohammad Abdul Malek Chowdhury and obtained first class first position in M.Sc. He started his professional career in 1988 in Bangladesh National Herbarium under BARC as a Scientific Officer and worked there till 1991. Finally, he joined in the Department Botany, Jahangirnagar University in 1991 as a Lecturer in Plant Ecology and Environment discipline. Gradually he has been promoted as Professor. He also acted as the Chairman of the Department of Botany, Jahangirnagar University from 2007 to 2010.

He attended in a postgraduate training in Taxonomy in Reading University, United Kingdom in 1993 sponsored by United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). He completed his Ph.D. research works entitled, “Ecology, Phytodiversity and Soil Nutrient status of Sal forests in Bangladesh” both in Phillips University, Germany and Jahangirnagar University funded by the DAAD Sandwich Ph.D. programme under the joint supervision of Professor Dr. Peter Poschlod and Professor Dr. A.B.M. Enayet Hossain; and obtained his Ph.D. degree from Jahangirnagar University in 2002. He also attended the Postdoctoral research fellowship programme in the Institute of Botany, Regensburg University, Germany in 2004 awarded by German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD).

Dr. Rahman developed ‘Plant Ecology and Environment Laboratory’ in the Department of Botany, JU and leading this lab. now. He conducted a good number of research projects through the collaboration of different GOs and NGOs including JU, UGC, BANBEIS, Ministry of Science and Technology, Ministry of Forest, Environment and Climate Change, Ministry of Education, The Asiatic Society, IUCN, FAO, The World Bank etc. He supervised about 40 M.Sc., 2 M.Phil. and 16 Ph.D. research students, two of which are under supervision. He is also a contributor of Encyclopedia of Bangladesh (Banglapedia) and Encyclopedia of Flora and Fauna of Bangladesh. He published about 125 research articles in peer-reviewed National and International journals and books. He wrote chapters in five books. He edited two books and also acted as a member of editorial board of different journals like, Life Science Journal of Bangladesh, JU Journal of Biological Sciences and Bangladesh Journal of Botany. Professor Rahman visited India, Germany, United Kingdom, Spain, Netherland and Austria for higher studies, conducting research, participating in training, seminar, conference and workshops. Presently he is involved with review of books entitled, “Strategic Management Plan of Invasive Alien Species of Plants” which are going to be published by IUCN.
