The  Department  of  Botany offers  four  years’ Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.)  degree in Botany. The curriculum adopted by this Department has been approved first by the Academic Committee of the Department, the Committee of Courses, the Faculty of Biological Sciences, and finally passed by the Academic Council and the Syndicate of Jahangirnagar University.

 

B. Sc. (Hons.) Program

Program outline: The four-year B. Sc. (Hons.) program in Botany is divided into four parts- Part I, Part II, Part III and Part IV. These four parts are comprised of 57 theoretical and practical courses including the viva-voce and cover the major thematic areas of Plant Sciences. The total mark for these four years courses is 3500 equivalent to 140 credits. Examination on the courses of Part-I, Part-II, Part-III and Part-IV held respectively at the end of first year, second year, third year and fourth year. A summary of the B. Sc. (Hons.) Program Curriculum is presented in Table 6.A full-unit course consisting of 100 marks (i.e. 10 in class attendance, 20 in tutorial and 70 in final examination) is equivalent to 4 credits and that of a half-unit course consisting of 50 marks (5+10+35) is equivalent to 2 credits. Viva-voce examination of 50 marks is also equivalent to 2 credits. The duration of theoretical examinations of 70 marks is of 4 hours and that of 35 marks is of 2.5 hours. The duration of practical examinations of 35 marks is of 6 hours.

Class Attendance: A student with class attendance of less than 60% in any course is not qualified to appear in the course-end examination of that course. Credits in the form of Marks are given to students attending classes over the minimum 60% mandatory requirement.

Study Tours: The Department conducts short and long field trips or study tours in different regions of the country for the students of B. Sc. (Hons.) program to gather field knowledge on flora, plant diversity and vegetation and to collect plant specimens of scientific interests. Through such field trips or study tours, students get the opportunity of knowing the nature in a team and usually with a lot of fun. Study tours at relevant research institutions and industries are also conducted for the students to acquaint them with the on-going research activities there. Following the participation in a field trip or study tour, each student has to submit a report and a note book and marks for that field trip or study tour is incorporated in the practical course suited best. Outside the country, a study tour to the SAARC countries was conducted by the teachers and students of the Department in 2002.

 

Assessment in B. Sc. (Hons.) Program: Assessment of each student for all courses of B. Sc. (Hons.) program is based on her/his marks obtained in- (i) tutorial examination held during the learning period, (ii) class attendance and (iii) final examination held at the end of the courses. In a theoretical or a practical course, 20% of the total marks is calculated from the written tutorial examination, 10% from the class attendance and 70% from the final examination. Tutorial examination on each course is conducted by the course teacher, whereas the final examination of each part, including the moderation of the questions of each course submitted by two examiners, is conducted by a four members’ examination committee following JU examination ordinance. The viva-voce examination is held after the completion of all written and practical examinations of each part.
